Album of the week: Tonight I'm Yours (1981)

We all know the feeling. You hear the latest song by your favorite artist on the radio and of course you want to have that record right away. So you run off to the nearest record store .... Oops, sorry, wrong decade... So, you boot up the computer, surf to an online store and order the record or order the download. If that's still not enough, you can of course also stream the track on Spotify or Apple Music and save it to your playlist. And why just this one song when the whole album is already available? And when you listen to it, you're often blindsided, because apart from the single release, the rest of the songs on the album are pretty - let's be nice - cheesy.
I only know a few albums that I really like from the first to the last song. One of them is and remains Rod Stewart's 1981 album TONIGHT I'M YOURS. The yellow and black cover with Rod's likeness alone grabbed me when I first bought it after its release. I think the cover of TIY is one of the best in Rod's wide-ranging discography.
And then you put the record on (sorry, I'm a music and Stewart fan of the older generation) and are immediately hit by the first notes of the title track. How can that leave you cold? TONIGHT I'M YOURS is still one of the best concert openers for me, because the song immediately gets people going. And it does the same on the album. You can hardly wait to get to the second track.
With HOW LONG, Rod slows down the tempo a little for a short time before things really get going again with TORA TORA TORA (OUT WITH THE BOYS). TEAR IT UP adds another shot of speed to the whole thing and by now you're really into this album. ONLY A BOY and JUST LIKE WOMAN are two beautiful slow songs that only Rod Stewart can sing like that. JEALOUS turns up the speed again before the singer lets us catch our breath once more with SONNY, before he really gets going again with YOUNG TURKS. YOUNG TURKS is also one of my favorite opening tracks, similar to TONIGHT I'M YOURS. But there can only ever be one at the beginning of a concert or an album. The final track is the beautiful NEVER GIVE UP ON A DREAM - it's a real shame that this song was never played live. At least I can't remember a live performance of it. NEVER GIVE UP ON A DREAM is probably one of the very best songs Rod Stewart has ever written.
Here are a few more facts about the album:
- TIY is Rod Stewart's eleventh studio album and was released on November 6, 1981
- The singles were TONIGHT I'M YOURS, HOW LONG & YOUNG TURKS
- The album went double platinum in Canada, platinum in Australia, Hong Kong and the USA and gold in the UK. Surprisingly, TIY did not make it to number one in any of these countries. The best placement was second place in Sweden. Here in Germany, the album was incomprehensibly less successful, with the best ranking in the German Top 100 being only 42nd place.
