Story: The Faces thrill at their first concert in Germany - "Stewart's voice gives you goosebumps"

Hamburg, 2 December 1970: It's a cloudy day on the Elbe, with rain showers coming down again and again. At seven degrees it is quite cool. Not the kind of weather to chase a dog out the door. And yet, on this cold and rainy evening, thousands of people make their way to a concert in Hamburg's Ernst-Merck-Halle, not knowing at the time that something historic was about to happen here.

The Ernst-Merck-Halle was originally rebuilt as an exhibition hall after the Second World War and inaugurated in December 1950. In addition to exhibitions, it was also used time and again to host major events. In 1952 the legendary Louis Armstrong played two concerts, in 1965 the Rolling Stones and a year later the Beatles as part of their Bravo lightning tour. In 1986, the hall fell victim to the expansion of the exhibition grounds and was demolished. And now, almost exactly four years to the day after the Beatles split up in April 1970, the Faces, a young band from England, are on stage in the Ernst-Merck-Halle. The band's lead singer is a certain Rod Stewart, on guitar Ron Wood, who now plays for the Stones.

The band is not yet very familiar to German audiences, as this evening is the first time the boys from the UK have appeared on a German stage in their still young career.
Despite the bad weather, long queues form in front of the box office and the entrances. The fans are excited to see what awaits them. The ticket price is ten D-marks, no comparison to today's ticket prices for the stars. In the end, the hall is sold out with 6000 spectators and at 8 pm sharp, the band jumps on stage.
The singer is particularly eye-catching - Rod Stewart dances and jumps across the stage in a golden suit, the start of a successful career in Germany. Only, of course, the young Rod doesn't know that yet on this evening in December 1970. His stage presence and distinctive voice captivate the audience from the very first moment. So it's no surprise that the show becomes a very big success. The setlist that evening includes a mixture of Stewart's own songs and cover versions. Among the best-known tracks the band plays that night are Maggie May, Every Picture Tells A Story and Stay With Me.
The day after, the press is all over the place. It rained praise. The Hamburger Morgenpost writes: "Rod Stewart is a charismatic entertainer who captivates the audience". Die Welt adds: "Stewart has a voice that gives you goose bumps".
In retrospect, it can be said that this first appearance in Germany was an important milestone, because it helped Rod Stewart to establish himself as an international star, and to make a name for himself in Germany.
The Faces performed in Hamburg with this line-up:
Rod Stewart (vocals)
Ron Wood (guitar)
Ronnie Lane (bass)
Ian MacLagan (keyboard)
Kenney Jones (drums)
