Rod Stewart Tribute: Rob Caudill (When Your Nose Gives You Direction)

Imagine you're at the airport, strolling relaxed through the city or sitting comfortably in a restaurant and all the people around you are staring at you as if you're from another galaxy, or constantly asking you for an autograph. There's no such thing? There is. Except that the man this blog is about is not from another world, nor does he look like a monster on Halloween. We're talking about Rob Caudill, who has a distinctive jawline, a shock of spiky blonde hair and, above all, that nose. A nose that is really only associated with one singer in the music industry - Sir Rod Stewart, and that showed the way for young Rob and set the direction in his career.
When Rob was 17 years old, he heard for the first time that he had a certain resemblance to Stewart. A statement that Caudill has heard over and over again since then and that led him to do what he has done today for many years: He became one of the world's best Rod Stewart impersonators. But first, young Rob started out the way millions of young people on this planet do. He became part of a band, first as a bass player for some local bands, then later with "The Breaks", whose first song "She Wants You" was played up and down on MTV. After a few years and the end of "The Breaks", Rob put together his first own band - "The Willys" quickly became one of the hottest bands in Memphis. Caudill also started working with Joe Walsh of the Eagles and jammed with many others like John Entwhistle of the Who, as well as members of Cheap Trick, Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Survivor and Red Hot Chili Peppers, to name a few.
In the mid-1990s, however, he found that he could not escape his striking resemblance to Rod Stewart. Joe Walsh advised him at the time to pursue his career as a Rod Stewart tribute. No sooner said than done - and since then Caudill has become one of the best impersonators worldwide. With his band, he has built up a repertoire of over 100 Stewart and Faces songs over the years and tours the world with his show. It's a life little Rob probably never dreamed of in his younger days. ""I have the best job in the world, I earn my living doing something I love," he says again and again.
What does a good Rod Stewart show depend on, we wanted to know? "First and foremost, of course, the voice. You have to have that natural, raspy voice that Rod has," says Rob Caudill. "Then there are a few little things that Rod does as well. Kicking footballs into the audience, twirling the microphone stand through the air every now and then. All things that are almost a trademark of Rod Stewart and that people come to his concerts for."
The talent of the American, who appeared as Rod Stewart impersonator on the 3rd season of the TV show America's Got Talent in 2008, spread even to the closest circle of Rod Stewart himself. Today, the now 60-year-old gets support from time to time from former members of the Rod Stewart band. Recently, Katja Rieckermann, who was lead saxophonist with Stewart from 2001 to 2015, was on stage with Caudill in several shows in the USA.
"Working with Katja is sensational, of course she knows all the songs we play off the top of her head. But on top of that, she's simply one of the best saxophonists in the world, and that gives our show a completely different touch," Caudill enthuses. The collaboration will continue, and both would like to tour Europe together in the foreseeable future. "I haven't had that many gigs in Europe. And I've really played almost all over the world," says Rob. "Once even for the Sultan of Malaysia as part of a wedding. Touring with Katja through her home country Germany and playing the Rod songs, that would really be a dream. I know there are a lot of long-time Rod Stewart fans in Germany who will surely enjoy our show as well." There are no concrete plans yet, but "we are working on it", says Rob.Those who would like to learn more from and about Rob Caudill can do so via the following channels:
